Rose varieties, produced by Iris Day
Hybrid tea rose
The hybrid tea rose type emerged around 1880, and nowadays it is the most widespread and well-known type of rose.
The blossoms of hybrid tea roses have a size/width up to 18 cm and an exquisite form. Stems are long and persistent, which makes this group of rose varieties suitable for blossom cut.
Due to the multi-annual selection of hybrid tea roses, you will find roses in all colors, except for classic /ink/ blue. Typical of hybrid tea roses is that in a single stem blooms a single blossom, and around it is possible to bloom a few buds that unfold after the overblown of the basic blossom. Their fragrance is strong or average strong.
Floribunda roses
The Floribunda rose type emerged in the first half of the 20th century, but the term Floribunda was adopted and became popular after 1950.
The first selected varieties of Floribunda roses are derived from a cross-fertilization between hybrid tea roses and Polyantha. Typical of Floribunda roses is that they have foliate blossoms – one stem can bloom a large number of blossoms.
Unlike the first group, the blossoms of Floribunda roses are not as large and fragrant, but they compensate this with their abundant blooms. This makes them widely applicable to both public and private gardens. They are suitable for shaping seed beds and can be easily combined with other types of vegetation.
Miniature roses
The type of miniature roses emerged around 1930, but the diversity of types occurred later.
Therefore, miniature roses are considered to be a relatively new group. They are characterized by small flowers and leaves, and their height does not exceed 40 cm. They are suitable for planting near paths, borders and rock gardens, and their small size allows planting in larger pots and boxes.
Climbing roses
Some varieties of climbing roses emerged before hybrid tea roses and for many decades the group has been enriching and expanding.
Typical of climbing roses is their great height – some sorts reach a height of 5 meters, although often we can expect a height of 2.50 – 3 m.
Blossoms of climbing roses can be large or small; single or foliate; with a strong or light fragrance – depending on the variety. The main application of this type of roses is to cover part of houses, vaults, pillars, fences, pergolas and old trees.
Shrub roses
This type of rose emerged in the 80s of the 20th century and continues to complement and extend even today. There is a great mix of varieties and this make it difficult to identify the main characteristics of the type.
The Shrub roses group includes all varieties that do not fit into the previous four groups. A more detailed division of this group's varieties leads to nine separate subgroups.
The most important thing about shrub roses is that they are extremely useful because they are a successful alternative to most shrubs like lilac, rhododendron or hibiscus. Similar to the previous group, their blossoms can be large or small; single or foliate; with a strong or light fragrance.
