Regional ethnographic museum – Plovdiv

Description

Regional ethnographic museum in the city of Plovdiv was founded in 1917 and since 1938 it has been located in the Kuyumdzhieva house, which is one of the most picturesque cultural monuments in the Old town of Plovdiv.

The museum is a center of cultural tourism and a scientific-educational institution.

The museum preserves, investigates, documents and exhibits cultural artifacts with ethnographic character.

Exhibitions in Regional ethnographic museum – Plovdiv:

  • The museum has a permanent exhibition, which includes traditional artifacts from the Rhodopes, Thrace and the Sredna Gora mountains - during the period of Bulgarian National Revival. Here, you can see some of the most characteristic crafts from the period: pottery, homespun and woolen braiding, coppersmithery, tailoring, ironsmithery. It is exhibited a rich collection of jewelry and church plate, national costumes, textiles.
  • Agriculture - the fund contains of 1000 inventory tools and utensils, used in agriculture and most of all in tobacco-growing, rose oil manufacture, wine producing, stock-breeding, rice-cultivation, gardening.
  • Textiles and Clothing - the fund has more than 11 000 exhibits and unique carpets, dating back to the middle and the end of the 19th century. Here, you can see traditional costumes and town suits from the region of Plovdiv and other parts of the country.
  • Crafts - it includes more than 7 000 inventory items, including copper utensils, ceramics, porcelain, adornments, clocks, antique arms, etc.
  • Interior and Furniture - a fund with more than 800 inventory items, which date back to the beginning of 19th century until the middle of the 20th century: painted china plates, stoves, oil lamps, parlour and bedroom furniture, painted chests and more.
  • Photo Gallery and Fine Art - the fund of the museum includes more than 100 valuable icons, wall panels, paintings, statuettes, woodcarvings and others.
  • A photo gallery with photos and illustrations of life in the region of Plovdiv. Most of the photographs are dated back to the beginning of the 20th century.
  • Musical instruments and Ritual properties - includes 5 400 exhibits: gramophone records and gramophones, martenitsa (twined tasselled red and white thread, symbol of spring and health), shepherd’s pipes, Easter eggs, hurdy-gurdies, pianos, national instruments and others.
